Wales' First Minister Rhodri Morgan today showed his support for the Welsh manufacturing industry by visiting the Rogerstone contract electronics manufacturer TT ems, a subsidiary of the global electronics manufacturing company TT electronics plc.
The First Minister’s visit was set up following an invitation from TTems employees Helen Lewis and Steve Davies, who met the First Minister at the Newport Business Club in February where he gave a talk on the support available to Welsh Businesses from the Welsh Assembly.
The First Minister was given a tour of the company's extensive range of product manufacturing facilities by Operations Director Geoff Cambray before taking the time to speak to a number of the company's 215 employees. Speaking of his visit, The First Minister said:
"It is a great pleasure to visit a home-grown company which is proving to be a great example of Welsh capability at its highest level. TT Electronics has recently achieved major success in winning a prestigious contract for the manufacture, assembly and testing of components for high frequency radios being manufactured for the UK army. This will position TT Electronics at the forefront in their field and I have no doubt that this will lead to even greater success for the company in the future."
The quality and extent of services provided by TTems recently resulted in the award of a £20 million contract from Harris Systems to manufacture sub-assemblies for use in HF Radio Systems. The company was selected from a list of 20 contract manufacturers to win the contract, following a stringent twelve month supplier selection process.
Philip Lawrence, Director and General Manager for TTems said:
"It was an honour to welcome Rhodri Morgan to Rogerstone and the interest that he showed in our capabilities combined with the contract from Harris Systems Limited has been a great boost to staff morale. This is the first step towards a growing relationship between TTems, Harris, WTI and the WDA who have played an important role in this opportunity."
